Online Therapy

In the last few years, I've moved my practice to working entirely online and see clients over video (usually Teams). This has proved a very popular option and provides a range of benefits which means it's an excellent fit for many of the clients I see, especially those whose time commitments, geography and lifestyle mean that a weekly commute isn't ideal, those who prefer to speak to me from the comfort of their own home, and those who choose to fit a session more flexibly within their working day. However, there are pros and cons of this approach, some of which I outline below.

Is Online Therapy Right for You?

Cons

  • Face-to-face interactions can have a different interpersonal quality and feel more intense / engaged.

  • If your home environment isn't one where you are able to talk privately or feel entirely comfortable, a neutral therapy room may be a better option.

  • No reliance on quality of internet connection.

Pros

  • Allows you to have sessions within the familiarity of your own home, which could feel more relaxed and comfortable.

  • No commute needed.

  • Easier to fit around or within a working day.

  • You can select the therapist / therapy approach most suitable for you, rather than being constrained by geography.

  • Flexibility to have therapy consistently regardless of where you are located.

  • Therapy more consistently accessible if there are any mobility / health concerns.

  • In the context of our learning from COVID, no considerations in terms of infection control.
